Build your first project. Or your tenth.

USYD has societies for computer science, for engineering, for plenty of specific fields. It doesn’t have one for actually building things. SUPsoc is that: a supportive place for students of any skill level to make projects, show them off, and get real feedback from people who might actually use them.

The whole idea is to start building, instead of just learning the theory.

SUPsoc doesn’t exist yet. The USU needs 20 interested students by 14 August before it can be created. That’s the entire reason this page exists.

First Build Night is Week 2.

WHAT ACTUALLY HAPPENS

Two things, all semester.

Not a lecture series. Not a workshop where you follow along and forget it by Thursday. You bring whatever you’re making, however rough.

EVERY TUESDAY, 4-6PM

Build Night

Come build alongside other people, or just bring something you've already made and get advice on it. Whether it ends up being a heads-down work session or more of a meet-other-builders thing is honestly up to whoever turns up. This only works if it's useful to you.

  • 4:00Intros: what you're working on, what you're stuck on
  • 4:15Build. Ask questions, look over shoulders, help someone out.
  • 5:45What did you get working?

TUESDAYS 6-8PM · WEEKS 5 AND 10

Project Showcase

Twice a semester. Show what you made, and if you want honest opinions, pitch it and get the room to actually try it. The point is real feedback from real people, not a competition.

Also planned: beginner friendly hackathons, where both software and hardware submissions are accepted.

If you’ve never finished anything, you’re exactly who this is for.

No experience needed

All skill levels, and we mean it. Plenty of us are starting from nothing. The point isn't to already know how. It's to start badly, next to someone doing the same thing.

No project needed

Turn up with nothing and join someone else's. Working on something real that already exists is the fastest way to learn anything.

Feedback, not marks

Show people what you made and hear where they got lost. That's the part a tutorial can't give you.

First years especially. You are not behind.

No membership fee, no commitment. Turn up when you can.
You’ll need a USU membership
The USU only counts signatures from its own members. It’s free for USYD students and takes two minutes. Sign up here either way, and add your USU ID when you have it.
We need an exec too
Exec and subcommittee roles aren’t open yet, but you can put in an expression of interest now. Tick the box in the form and we’ll be in touch when they open. No society experience needed.

We'll only send you 1 email, to announce the society launch.

Are you a USU member?

It’s on your USU account. This is what makes your signature count toward the 20. If you can’t find it, choose “No, not yet” and we’ll sort it out later.

“No idea yet” is a completely normal answer.

We’ll send you one email, to say the society has launched. Nothing else, ever. Your details are used only for the USU society application, are seen only by the founding exec, and the whole database is deleted once SUPsoc launches.
